Edith Tergau
Edith makes nature visible and tangible on a microscopic level. She says: “My artistic vision revolves around exploring and capturing the natural world in both a visually and conceptually profound way. My ceramic sculptures, grouped under the heading “Natural Curiosities ”, reflect my continued fascination for the science of living organisms, life forms and life phenomena. A central theme in my work is making visible the vulnerable nature around us by enlarging nature on a microscopic level. This magnification reveals that everything around us contributes to our existence. There is more than we can see; we cannot exist without bacteria and bacilli, because the world does not stop with animals, trees and plants. In my work I try to establish the delicate balance between growth and impermanence of life, inspired by nature at the cellular level. This is reflected in the choice of my subjects and the design of my sculptures, which are refined and powerful, but at the same time have a fragile appearance. My work invites reflection on how people deal with their surrounding nature. To express my artistic vision, I mainly work with clay, a material that has an intrinsic connection with nature and with which I have developed my design language. By manually building my sculptures, step by step and without knowing exactly what the end result will look like in advance, I am able to express my intuitive approach to the natural forms.
