Mieke Delvaeye
Mieke Delvaeye's ceramic objects are the reflection of a moment in time, a projection of freedom. They show human expression, embracing the aesthetic value of imperfection and asymmetry. The different layers of colorful glazes on the individual pieces further emphasize the language and tactility of the skin of the objects. The pieces interact with their environment and allow the viewer to feel, see, observe and discover. Mieke says: “ I have always been inspired by the vase shape. It is a form that is connected to the history of ceramics. She is a source of innovation, starting from something “old ” to create something new from myself, and also a form to investigate myself, who am I, what is my history, why am I who I am? My work combines different layers, the structure of the surface during construction, the layers of different glazes that come over it are symbolic of my stratification and the combination of my aspects that make me who I am. Vases have always surrounded me, they form an object, a container for me, in which I can display an abstraction of myself, an observation, a feeling or a memory. When I was just starting to make ceramics, I strove to build technically symmetrical objects, but having achieved that goal, it missed the opportunity for me to put feeling into the work and display emotion. At that time I also started to work asymmetrically and imperfectly, after all, nature, where trees are asymmetrical, for example, show the perfection and beauty that can be found in it. Working in this way is also for me the reflection of humanity in a world that is high-tech. Nature is a great source of inspiration for me, both in terms of design and in the glazes I use. Working this way also allows to work with a minimum of tools and with enormous freedom. Freedom is an important aspect for me as a person.
